Life. Dreams…and knocking into lamp posts

Rotaract and me

While googling for photos for my previous post “Places I would’ve been to…”,  I stumbled upon many pictures of Rotaract events with my face inside. Of course I was frantically saving every signs of my existence! haha…and i realise throughout my 3 years with Rotaract, I’ve had alot of wonderful memories and made alot of wonderful friends along the way. It is truly beautiful to be able to bring smiles to those less fortunate with the simplest act of just being there. I think they brought more joy and smiles to my face than I to them. The wonders of Christmas brought alive by Magical Workshop, NUH Children’s Project, Lions Befriender and the weekend trip- Absolute Paradise…all made up the chapter of Rotaract and me.

Magical Workshop

One of the most unforgettable person i met in Magical Workshop @ Cheshire Home is her. I think her simple laughs of joy has touched many of us present there. Despite her inability to talk due to stroke, her signature “mumum mummum” (when she tried to speak and sing) and the thumbs up will remain in our hearts.

The wonderful lady that brought smiles to everyone of us

I would loved to put up more pictures of her, but our professional photographer, Yao Hui has copyrighted his work lol. I am really grateful that he never fails to come by and capture those beautiful moments. My memory of him is The photographer that just walk past us while steal-snapping our pictures with hands down like a normal passerby! Me and my friends was sitting by some pond chatting away, only realised after he walked past! Felt cheated lol. This is the link to all his masterpieces including Magical Workshop III, IV and V–> http://www.pbase.com/sathea/root

Magical Workshop IV (Dec 2007)

Oh! accidentally stumbled upon these masterpieces. Btw, they’re not slices of cake, they’re towels wrapped onto a triangle cardboard and ornamented and wrapped up with that pretty plastic wrapper (pretty but a true devil to manipulate). We took almost the whole day making them, put in all our sweat and blood man…we were damn pro after awhile, even had a designated person just cutting the right length of cellophane tape lol. It was alot of hard work, but looking at this beautiful formation at the end, well…it’s just so pretty:)

Absolute Paradise

D-Paradise is another place where I’ve met a few of my Rotaract buddies incl CM, tasted for the very first time a real passion fruit (instead of passion fruit juice only), my first attempt on riding the a bicycle since kindergarten under a dedicated sifu (can’t rmbr who tho;p was it that joker doc?). It was a fun trip at this fruit farm getaway hidden among the greens in Melaka. We got to stay in cool kampung chalets (those rumah papan with legs type you know) with open-air bathrooms. I still rmbr the relaxing feeling of showering under the stars..hmm…(wait! what were you thinking?! I am surrounded by high walls k..) Then there was night jungle trekking up the hill, and oh oh..a few brave Rotaracters even tried the fire-breathing stunts as a finale at the peak.

Fire-breathing!

NUH Children’s Project

NUH Children’s Project is the first project I was involved in. I was also part of the pioneer batch. Although I was only involved for 3 semesters and the project is now dropped, I have learned alot about organising activities for the kids in hospital. It is very different  from organising activities for kids in the homes which I was more familiar with. Here, kids can range from 3-year-old cute little boys to 17-year-old teens. Patients come and go every week. Some are immobilised, too sick or grumpy to entertain us. It was indeed a challenge to come up with multiple ideas for the wide age range and squeeze our brain juices to think of something to cheer those who can’t leave their bed. Afterall you can’t ask a 16-year-old “cool” chap to join in some elementary kid’s colouring session lol.

Lions Befriender

LB organises activities mainly for lonely elderlies at one of the HDB blocks @Holland Village. Our monthly lunch service comprises of some games and activities that helps give the elderlies some mental and physical workouts as well as bring some fun and laughter into their lives. One thing I am truly amazed is the creative juices that flows amongst the LB pioneers and committee members who have came up with so many wonderful ideas catered esp for elderlies such as math and memory games for mental workouts to simple dances or movements to encourage them to exercise. Not forgetting all the retro karaoke and dance performances that got the elderlies cheering.

Guess-the-occupation game- guess what's my occupation?;)
